Eintracht Frankfurt beat Rangers 5-4 on penalties in the UEFA Europa League final in Seville on Wednesday, securing their first European title in 42 years.
This is the first time since 1980 in which Rangers have won this tournament, which was previously known as the UEFA Cup.
Nigerian Midfielder Joe Aribo scored 57 minutes into the game to give them a 1-0 lead but Frankfurt came back to equalize in late in the game through Rafael Santos Borre.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the 118th minute, when Kevin Trapp made a spectacular save to deny Ryan Kent from close range.
Trapp was the hero and he also saved a penalty in the shootout to help Frankfurt beat rangers 5-4. The German club had previously knocked out Real Betis, Barcelona and West Ham on their way to the final.
Seville’s Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium was awash with crisp white Frankfurt jerseys on a sea of Rangers blue as the two teams battled for a place in next season’s Champions League group stage. Frankfurt won the game and will play champions league football next season despite having finished 11th in Germany’s Bundesliga.
Rangers had more of the ball in the first half but Frankfurt posed the stronger threat, taking nine of the first 10 shots. Filip Kostic had a great chance to open the scoring after running 70 yards with the ball, but his shot went just wide.
