Barcelona has identified Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso as the club’s top target to reinforce its left-back position this summer.
Sport say Barcelona are close to signing the 31 year old, and that the club’s president, Joan Laporta, has met with Valencia’s president, Anil Murthy, to discuss the transfer. Sport add that the pair had lunch together on Tuesday.
Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing Luis Gayà from Valencia. They want to acquire a left-back to compete with Jordi Alba, and Gayà is an option. However, at the moment he is behind Marcos Alonso on the club’s targets.
The latest reports suggest that Barcelona have agreed a three-year contract with the Chelsea defender, and will wait for the player to discuss a move with the London club before finalising an agreement.
He is contracted to Chelsea until 2023, but has informed the club he wants to leave. He has already been in contact with Atlético Madrid, but will instead sign for Barcelona.
He now needs to reach an agreement with Chelsea for a departure, but is “sure” that they will “open the door” for him as they understand his personal circumstances and wish to return to his homeland.
