Following his team’s defeat to Real Madrid yesterday, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged that he had made a tactical error by selecting Andreas Christensen.
On Wednesday night, Chelsea succumbed to a 3-1 defeat in its Champions League quarter final first leg against Spanish leader Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge.
Benzema’s hat-trick inside 46 minutes gave Madrid a significant advantage in their Champions League quarterfinal tie.
It was Havertz’s first-half goal, though, that perhaps gave Chelsea the slimmest of hopes going into next week’s second leg at the Bernabeu.
In the first half, Chelsea struggled to deal with Madrid’s attacking duo of Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema.
In particular, the work of Vinicius down the right flank was too much for Christensen to handle in the first half.
At half-time, Tuchel made some tactical adjustments to combat the threat, but the damage had already been done.
Christensen was left exposed one-on-one and provided little defensive support against Vinicius.
In the postgame press conference, manager Tuchel said he made a mistake by starting Christensen on the right of a three.
“Yes, it is my mistake,” he said.
Chelsea now travel away to Southampton in the weekend in a bid to strengthen their place in the race for top four.
