Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri has stated that Sergej Milinkovic-Savic “will not remain in Italy” if a big-money deal is to be completed this summer, with Manchester United reportedly interested in the highly-rated midfielder.
PSG and Real Madrid have also been connected with the Serbia international, who has returned to form this season with 11 goals and 12 assists across all competitions.
Those attributes have drawn admiring glances from across Europe, with Sarri admitting that a trade might be completed in the next window if an ever-increasing asking price in the Italian capital is fulfilled by any of Milinkovic-numerous Savic’s suitors.
Will Milinkovic-Savic be moving this summer?
Since Milikovic-Savic burst into the limelight with 14 goals in the 2017-18 season, Lazio have been keen to emphasize on a regular basis that they would not part with any valuable assets without a battle.
That is still the official stance at Stadio Olimpico, although Sarri acknowledges that a team from outside Italy may try to force the issue, adding when asked about renewed transfer speculation: “Speaking to the President, I have become convinced that if Milinkovic does leave, and that will not happen easily, he will not remain in Italy.”
Is Milinkovic-Savic ready for a transfer?
The Serbian international joined Lazio from Genk in the summer of 2015 and is now under contract till 2024.
Juventus have also been connected with him recently, but Sarri’s comments suggest to take them out of the running.
Milinkovic-Savic has given no hint that he is ready to pursue a move abroad, instead discussing a potential top-four battle in his current surroundings next season, although he is conscious that his game is being elevated.
Following Lazio’s 2-2 tie with Juventus on Monday, in which he scored a stoppage-time equalizer, the midfielder informed Sky Italia about his current form: “Under Sarri, I progressed; I scored 11 goals and provided 11 assists, so this has been the best season of my career.”
“We need a few more players next season to compete for a place in the Champions League.”
