Paul Scholes blasted Mikel Arteta for trying to ‘influence’ the referee during Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Manchester United, as he told Premier League Productions (23/04/22 at 1:25 pm).
The Manchester United legend was making reference to the penalty that was awarded to Arsenal and Bukayo Saka in the first half.
At first, Eddie Nketiah had put the ball into the back of the net, only for VAR to rule it out for offside.
But, whilst VAR was checking that, they also had an eye on Alex Telles’ challenge on Saka, with VAR asking the on-field referee, Craig Pawson, to look at his monitor regarding that incident.
As Pawson was going to his monitor to check that call, Arteta was pretty animated on his touchline and it didn’t impress Scholes.
“At the time, I thought it was offside,” said Scholes. “I didn’t really think of the foul, to be honest.
“That brings into question whether it’s a clear and obvious error, which is the only reason it should go to the VAR. It’s a coming together, of course, it is.
“I think Arteta is a disgrace there. He shouldn’t be allowed to do that. If you see it again, he actually goes to the crowd to try and influence the referee a little. All the players around them as well.
“That shouldn’t be allowed. But it’s a little bit clumsy from Telles.”
There were a number of controversial calls at the Emirates, but Arsenal won’t care one jot because it’s three valuable points for them.
That win moved them into fourth in the Premier League table – and now two points ahead of Tottenham.
Spurs failed to respond to Arsenal’s win during the early kick-off on Saturday because they recorded a goalless draw at Brentford hours later.
Either way, whilst Arsenal are dreaming of a return to Champions League football, those at Man United are facing the possibility of no Europe at all if they continue going down their current road.
