Arsenal are exploring the possibility of signing striker Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City in the summer transfer window, according to The Athletic.
Discussions between Arsenal’s technical director Edu and Jesus’s representatives are believed to have been taking place for a number of months and the 25-year-old is thought to be open to the prospect.
Arsenal are looking to strengthen their attack in the upcoming market and Gabriel Jesus — who joined City from Palmeiras in 2016 — is one potential acquisition.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Everton’s 25-year-old striker, is also among the options being considered.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta worked with Jesus in his previous role at City and sources view the North London club as current favourites to recruit him.
Jesus has seen his game time limited at City and if they succeed in landing Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, that would be further impacted.
The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Haaland, 21, has approved a switch to the Etihad Stadium and it believed the striker’s intermediaries have reached an initial agreement with City over personal terms.
Gabriel Jesus existing deal expires in 2023 and that raises the prospect of a move, although negotiations are yet to begin between Arsenal and City. The reigning Premier League champions insist they do not want to encourage transfer speculation around him.
The Brazil international would help to reinforce Arsenal’s front line following the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Barcelona in January, while the future of captain Alexandre Lacazette at the Emirates Stadium is uncertain.
The forward reminded Arsenal what he can bring to the club should he make the switch to north London in the summer.
The Brazilian international scored four times and provided an assist for Pep Guardiola’s side who beat bottom of the table Watford 5-1 on Saturday, just a day after being strongly linked with a move to the Gunners.
Jesus is highly rated at Manchester City and worked closely with Mikel Arteta during the Spaniard’s time as assistant to Guardiola.
Despite Edu reportedly briefing Joao that he did not want to address rumours surrounding Jesus during the interview, the interest certainly appears concrete and would match plans to make top-quality additions ahead of next season.
