Sergio Reguilon has seen his short-term deal at Man United cut short, with the left-back now set to return to Spurs.
Manchester United Football Club have utilised the loan system fairly well under Erik ten Hag, albeit a small sample size. I actually enjoyed watching Wout Weghorst play for the Old Trafford club, while Sofyan Amrabat adds an extra body in midfield.
Sergio Reguilon has been utilised in that left-back slot this term after signing from Tottenham Hotspur on a short-term deal. The Spaniard was brought in to start game sin the absence of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Both of whom have been lost to injury.
The Spaniard started seven games for United, looking pretty good in the Reds’ back four. However, according to The Athletic, the 27-year-old will now return to Spurs as the Old Trafford side have triggered a break clause in his loan.
With Shaw now back fit and Malacia returning soon, coupled with a drastic reduction in the number of games played due to a European exit, it does make sense to allow Reguilon to head back to North London. Simply put, he will not play the games his salary would demand if he remained in Manchester.
This is exactly why United asked for a break clause in the loan to be added. They knew exactly when Malacia and Shaw would return, so it was good business sense on their part.
Albeit a short stay at the club, Reguilon did look pretty good in spells. He’ll always be remembered as someone who pulled on the United shirt twelve times during his career. Fair play to him for accepting that challenge with both hands and performing up to standard.
Best of luck in the future, Sergio.
