Man Utd are beginning to step up their search for a new manager, with reports claiming that former Real Madrid chief Julen Lopetegui is on a four-man shortlist alongside long-term candidates Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag.
Former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique, who is currently head coach of the Spanish national team, is also under consideration for the role.
In recent weeks, Pochettino and Ten Hag have appeared to be the main names in the frame to permanently succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the end of the season.
Current interim boss Ralf Rangnick has been at the helm since late November, and despite the German heavily hinting early in his tenure that he’d be keen on a longer stint in the dugout, that now looks very unlikely after his uninspiring spell in charge.
With over half of the season gone, Man Utd hierarchy are stepping up their plans to appoint a permanent boss, according to The Athletic.
The report claims that United are focusing on candidates who have extensive experience working for major European teams, which is why Lopetegui and Enrique are now in the mix.
Lopetegui had a disastrous spell with Spanish giants Real Madrid back in 2018, where he was axed after just 14 matches.
But Lopetegui has rebuilt his reputation in La Liga at Sevilla over the past couple of years and has even masterminded their unexpected title challenge this term.
Enrique is also under consideration after he enjoyed a stunning trophy-laden stint at Barcelona before he was lured away from the Nou Camp for the top job in Spanish football.
