Man United have eyes on Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, as a potential signing who could replace Casemiro.
Manchester United’s squad is going to look rather different next season. With INEOS now in charge and looking to take the club in a different direction, I fully expect to see a major overhaul take place.
Some big names will leave. It’s just the nature of the situation. As a result, signings will have to be made to fill their position within the dressing room.
Among those players who could depart is Casemiro. He hasn’t looked the same player this term. Be it due to injuries, losing that little bit of pace or a combination of the two, the ex-Real Madrid man hasn’t looked as dominant.
According to The Mirror, Casemiro will ‘likely’ leave, with United ‘weighing up’ a move for a 23-year-old midfielder as his potential replacement. That man is Joao Gomes.
According to the report, United are looking to sign a holding midfielder this summer, with the club watching Gomes on ‘several occasions’ this season. The most recent scouting mission took place this month as Wolves beat Fulham 2-1.
United wouldn’t have it all their own way, with Tottenham and Newcastle also showing an interest in the Brazilian, who recently earned his first call-up for international duty.
Wolves themselves are aware of interest in one of their key players, and the fact they’re already trying to identify a replacement is the biggest indication yet that Gomes could be on the move this coming summer.
Gomes’ £40m rating is rather cheap for a player of his age and quality, so I’d be surprised (but pleased) if United manage to get a deal done for around that figure.
