Man United could look to Nacho Fernandez to help solve their defensive problems this summer.
Manchester United will undoubtedly sign at least one defender this summer. The Old Trafford side have struggled for any sort of consistency back there this season, making Erik ten Hag’s job that much more difficult.
Lisandro Martinez’s injury issues have been the biggest problem, while Raphael Varane has spent too long out injured also. Then you have Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans. All three face uncertain futures at the club.
Ten Hag is no doubt weighing up all the potential options, with a new name thrown into the mix by Fichajes; Nacho Fernandez.
According to their information, the Spaniard has taken the decision to not renew his contract with Real Madrid this coming summer. Hence, he will be a free agent.
United are said to be one of a few clubs keen on signing Nacho, with Inter Milan and Juventus also credited with an interest.
According to Fichajes, the veteran centre-back has emerged as an ‘attractive’ option for United, with Varane’s departure from Old Trafford said to be ‘imminent’.
The Reds like Nacho’s versatility, due to the fact he can play as a wing-back also, while his ‘experience’ could be of ‘great value’ for this young United side.
Nacho would no doubt bring some quality and consistency to a team that genuinely needs it. However, I worry that a lack of Champions League football may make it difficult for the defender to choose United over his other potential options.
I’d also be wary about overpaying in terms of weekly wage. Nacho could follow the Casemiro/Varane route in that regard. I’d avoid a long-term contract if I were INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
