Man United have made their minds up over the future of Scott McTominay.
Last summer, Manchester United tried to start a major overhaul of the squad. The plan was to let some fringe players leave, though it proved to be difficult due to their massive wages. That left Erik ten Hag effectively with one hand tied behind his back, working with some players he doesn’t necessarily believe are part of his long-term plans.
It’s no secret. Scott McTominay was among them. The United gaffer would have preferred to move away from the midfielder last summer, though it’s fair to say the Scotland international has been a key source for goals this term. That has seemingly led to a change of heart.
It’s the Daily Star with the claim. They state that United have ‘decided to keep’ the 27-year-old at the club, following his nine-goal campaign. Furthermore, McTominay will now be given a new contract.
The midfielder is said to be ‘firmly back in favour’ with manager Ten Hag, while McTominay has also convinced the new Reds hierarchy he is a ‘vital’ part of the future. While he’s set to be rewarded with a pay rise.
I don’t mind McTominay. As a player, I’m unsure he’s good enough to start in a title-winning side on a regular basis, though as a squad player, he’s someone who can chip in with some vital goals. I am indifferent either way, though if the right offer did come in, I’d expect the club to consider it.
The Daily Star reckon he’s only on about £60k-a-week, which is relatively low in the grand scheme of things. As long as that figure isn’t bumped up too significantly, I do see the logic in keeping him around as he’s now an established figure in that dressing room.
