Man United are looking to sign Wolves’ Joao Gomes as a Casemiro replacement.
Manchester United Football Club need to invest in their playing squad this summer, as the Red Devils look to strengthen and start to compete for major honours again.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS will be hoping to hit the ground running, making some positive acquisitions that fit in line with Erik ten Hag’s style of play, assuming he’ll stay on as manager.
Last week, we covered a claim which suggested Joao Gomes was being eyed by the hierarchy as a potential option. Over the last 24 hours, that has been backed up by another source.
This time around, it’s Sport. According to their information, United have identified the 23-year-old as one of their transfer ‘objectives’. Once again, it’s reiterated that Gomes is viewed as a Casemiro replacement.
In his first season at Molineux, Gomes has established himself in the side, coupled with Casemiro’s ‘miserable’ season at Old Trafford, due to injury and a decline in ability.
In terms of Gomes’ cost, United are said to be preparing an offer of around £40m, with the Brazil international’s ball recovery highlighted as one of his main strengths. This is exactly what the Reds need more of in the current side.
Ten Hag could look to Gomes’ versatility as another major selling point. This is a player who can fulfil a variety of roles in midfield depending on the given situation, while you’d assume he’d only improve with better quality of players around him.
With money tight, the £40m fee feels very reasonable in the modern day game. I’d love to see this deal get done as it’d send out a positive message to the rest of the league.
