Cody Gakpo has admitted he held talks with Erik ten Hag over the summer, but a deal eventually didn’t happen.
Over the summer, Manchester United were heavily linked with a move to acquire PSV Eindhoven winger, Cody Gakpo.
The Dutchman never made it to Manchester, with the Red Devils choosing to splash the cash on Antony instead. It always felt like there wasn’t enough money within the budget to bring the two wide players in at that moment in time.
Gakpo, who had an incredible 2021/22 season for PSV, has started this term in similar manner. No doubt his individual stock has only risen as a result, with other clubs starting to take notice while his transfer value will only increase.
Now, in a recent interview, the summer United target has admitted he held talks with Ten Hag, while claiming he was ‘close to leaving’ PSV, presumably for United, during the window
Check out what Cody Gakpo had to say on talks with Erik ten Hag here:
“I was close to leaving, I spoke to Erik ten Hag a few times at Manchester United,” Gakpo said, per The Times.
“In the end the deal didn’t go through, which was a shame, for me and my development, and because Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, but also for PSV, because to transfer a player to Manchester United is a good thing for the club.”
Although Gakpo seems gutted about the move falling through, you cannot imagine it’ll be too long before the offers start flooding in for the wide man.
Will United make their move again? Who knows, but that’ll probably have to wait until the summer, rather than a deal potentially taking place in January.
The problem for the Red Devils is that interest in Gakpo from elsewhere will have only heightened. It may now be tougher to acquire Ten Hag’s Dutch compatriot as a result of these excellent performances.
I will imagine this one will drag on for a little while yet.
