Iñigo Martínez is an American Football fan. The Barcelona center-back took time during his holiday break to give an interview about his life outside of what people in the United States call soccer, and he spoke about his love for the NFL game and how much he admires the teamwork and dedication of the players.
Iñigo says he’s the only player in the Barça dressing room who watches the NFL regularly, but it doesn’t stop him from following the league as closely as he can. He also revealed who his favorite quarterback is, and Iñigo Martínez is clearly a smart man.
“I’m a Mahomes guy, I’ve always been enchanted by him. I loved Brady before but he left us, so now I’m very much a Mahomes guy.
“I try to follow the league as much as I can, every time I’m able to watch it I’ll do it. It’s a very complicated sport, and the amount of study that teams do on each other is astounding to me.
“I saw a documentary about how much they watch and study every play and all of that is based on how much of a team sport this is, and even though there are players who defend and players who attack, they are still one, tight as a knot, a real team.
“Every one has to know all the plays, and there are a thousand of them, and that just shows what it means to be a team, to be united around one leader on the pitch. That’s why I enjoy the sport so much.
“Careers are short because there are so many injuries and so much contact, but that’s part of the deal. The truth is it’s a sport that’s always attracted me.”

It’s not a surprise that a center-back as serious and physical as Iñigo would love the NFL. I wish I knew him so we could both complain about the Chiefs receivers dropping every pass thrown to them which means Mahomes probably won’t win the Super Bowl again this year.
