Arsenal Line Up £66m Move For World Class Attacker As Edu Reach Preliminary Agreement
According to Portuguese outlet Record, Arsenal have reportedly opened talks with Benfica over a deal for striker, Darwin Nunez.
The Gunners will need to bring in at least one new striker before the start of next season.
In January, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left the club, and it’s believed that both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah might also leave when their contracts expire at the end of this campaign.
Arsenal have been linked to striker Darwin Nunez. They could do with a massive scoring threat for the future – he is the best centre-forward in the entire Portugal league at the moment.
Arsenal can afford Benfica’s asking price for Darwin Nunez
The report claims that Arsenal technical director Edu has opened talks with Nunez and the Uruguayan is listening to the offer.
Reportedly, Nunez rejected West Ham and Newcastle recently but he may have trouble rejecting Arsenal when they come calling.
Benfica value their star player at around €80 million and know that it’s inevitable he’ll move to a bigger club in the near future. But they are prepared to let him go this summer provided they recoup x4 of what they paid for him.
That’s undoubtedly a lot of money to spend on a 22-year-old, but former Arsenal captain Aubameyang has enabled the Gunners to spend big on his potential replacement.
The Gunners have reportedly saved a lot of money after terminating the Gabon star’s £350,000-a-week contract. This news leaves them with extra funds to spend on a new striker this summer and Nunez might just be that player.
Our View
It’s claimed by the Express that Arsenal have already begun talks with Nunez’s agents, and he may join the Gunners during the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old has been phenomenal for Benfica this season.
He has scored 26 times thus far in the campaign and with at least nine games left to go, it’s not farfetched to see him hit that 35 goal mark.
Labeled as a ‘world-class’ striker, many believe Nunez has the credentials to be a success in the Premier league and at Arsenal.
No doubt, He will be a terrific addition to Mikel Arteta’s side and the fact that the Gunners can afford Benfica asking price is good news.
