The Premier League has been won by Manchester City, with Liverpool coming in second.
The Premier League title race came down to the final game of the season, with only one point separating the two teams heading into Sunday’s matches.
Pep Guardiola’s side, however, were the first to cross the line, denying Jurgen Klopp’s Reds the chance to complete a historic quadruple.
Man City did it the hard way
Manchester City appeared to be choking on the final day of the season, trailing 2-0 to Aston Villa with 15 minutes remaining at home, with Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho scoring.
City won their fourth Premier League title in five seasons thanks to three goals in five minutes, including a double from Ilkay Gundogan either side of a Rodri goal.
Despite beating Wolves 3-1, Liverpool finished second and missed out on four trophies this season, despite winning the League Cup and FA Cup, and preparing for the Champions League final next week.
At Etihad Stadium, incredible scenes unfolded
Man City’s most famous Premier League triumph came in 2012, when they snatched the title from Manchester United on the final day.
Sergio Aguero scored a 94th-minute winner to secure a 3-2 win over QPR on that occasion, and while Man City scored their winner earlier this time, it was the same scenario.
A statue of Aguero was erected earlier this month to commemorate that goal and his other achievements with Man City, and the current squad recreated the incredible emotions of that day.
At the final whistle in Manchester, fans rushed onto the pitch, creating joyful scenes before the team was presented with another Premier League trophy.
Liverpool’s dejection
While the Reds have a chance to win the Premier League in front of their own fans, they have missed out on the chance to win it in front of their own fans.
“I’m very proud of the boys and what we’ve done,” Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson told BBC Final Score after the game. We did everything we could today, but it wasn’t enough.
“I was always confident we would find the goal we needed and we did.”
