Liverpool beat Chelsea 4-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw to win the FA Cup at Wembley Stadium. Kostas Tsimikas scored in sudden-death, after Alisson saved from Mason Mount.
Liverpool and Chelsea met in a rematch of the Carabao Cup final, and the second meeting followed the same pattern as the first. Both teams had several opportunities to win the match in normal time, although the frantic nature of the contest slowed down in extra time.
Liverpool made a bright start and threatened early, but Chelsea grew into the game. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson made a save to stop Marcos Alonso, Christian Pulisic, and substitute Diogo Jota also had chances before Mohamed Salah was forced off with a groin injury.
Chelsea started the second half well, but Liverpool were soon on top. Alonso came close, Alisson saved Pulisic’s effort, and Alonso hit the crossbar with a free-kick.
Diaz and Jota also went close for Chelsea before Robertson hit the post with a volley from close range. With time running out, Diaz curled a shot wide from the edge of the box to almost win it in stoppage time.
Liverpool claimed the FA Cup after a thrilling penalty shootout contest. Chelsea must only look to what next under a new owner. As for Mason Mount, he will wonder what might have been after his decisive penalty was saved by Alisson Becker.
