Arsenal have identified RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres as potential targets to bolster the striking department, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

The Gunners are expected to invest in a marquee striker this summer and the club have been linked with several names over the past few months.

In a Q & A session on The Athletic, Ornstein has now revealed that Sesko and Gyokeres are well thought of at Arsenal, and he does not see Evan Ferguson making the move.

Ferguson has had limited playing time with Brighton this term. With the Seagulls set to demand a huge fee, Ornstein feels a move is less likely at the moment.

The reputed journalist added that he does not see the Gunners making a move for either Ivan Toney or Victor Osimhen during the summer transfer window.

He said: “As previously reported and widely documented, the likes of Sesko and Gyokeres are well thought of. As is Ferguson but the price Brighton would want and the season he has had so far perhaps makes him less likely at the moment. I don’t see it being an Osimhen or Toney.”

Arsenal could sign either Sesko or Gyokeres this summer

The Gunners have lacked the cutting edge in the striking department this season. Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah have netted a combined tally of nine goals in the top-flight.

Their inconsistency has paved the way for Kai Havertz to lead the line. The German star has been in superb form with four goals from his previous four league games.

Despite this, manager Mikel Arteta will want a specialist striker with a goalscoring pedigree. Gyokeres looks the best fit for the club amid his stunning season at Sporting.

He has registered 36 goals and 14 assists from just 39 outings. He will face a stiffer challenge in England, but even half of that tally would provide an upgrade for the club.

The Swede won’t come on the cheap with a release clause of €100m in his deal. Sporting could be willing to negotiate, but may not accept anything less than €80m for him.

Sesko, on the other hand, had a slow start to his debut season at Leipzig, but he has six goal contributions in his last six starts in the German Bundesliga.

Compared to Gyokeres, the 20-year-old is still learning his trade at the highest level, but he has the potential to become an elite centre-forward in the long run.

Sesko could be sold for his €50m release clause this summer. We would personally prefer a deal for Gyokeres, but won’t be surprised if the club move for Sesko.
