Arne Slot expressed his delight after Liverpool secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The result extended Liverpool’s perfect run in Europe, adding to earlier wins against AC Milan and Bologna, leaving the Reds on maximum points alongside Premier League rivals Aston Villa.
The match’s only goal came from Darwin Nunez, who tapped in a goal-bound effort from Mohamed Salah in the first half. Slot praised his team’s performance, particularly their ability to control the game against tough opposition, though he admitted the closing stages required solid defending from Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, and goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Speaking after the match, Slot said, “We’re really happy with the win. It was a difficult away game, but we controlled large parts of it. In the last few minutes, we needed Virgil, Ibou, and our goalkeeper to step up, and they did.”
Kelleher and Nunez were among the standout performers, with Slot singling out the goalkeeper’s contribution. “We’re fortunate to have such quality in every position,” Slot said. “Ali [Alisson] has been out, and Caoimhin has stepped up again. He was crucial for us tonight.”
Slot was also pleased with Nunez’s decisive goal but emphasized the importance of the team effort, praising Cody Gakpo and Salah for their roles in the build-up. “I asked Darwin for a goal, and he delivered, but it was a team goal with Cody and Mo playing key roles.”
Despite the European success, Slot is already focused on the next challenge, as Liverpool face Arsenal in a crucial Premier League clash at the weekend. The Gunners, who recently lost to Bournemouth and struggled in a narrow win over Shakhtar Donetsk, will be eager to bounce back, especially at home.
Slot acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying, “Arsenal are always tough, especially at the Emirates. Mikel Arteta has done an amazing job over the last few years, so we’ll need to be at our best to get a result.”
