In a not so surprising move, Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku has returned to Inter Milan to complete his loan deal.
The striker re-signed for the Blues in a club-record £98 million ($120m) deal after helping the Italian club win the title—but was unable to replicate that form at Stamford Bridge.
After reaching an agreement with Chelsea, Inter has officially announced the signing of the 29-year-old striker, who had previously been playing for them.
On Wednesday, June 28, Romelu Lukaku touched down at Linate Airport in Milan with his entourage and underwent a medical before signing for Inter on a season-long loan. Lukaku told reporters upon his arrival: “I’m so happy!”
The Belgium international scored 15 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions, Lukaku struggled to hold down a regular spot in Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI, and it was an unhappy marriage for both parties.
The Blues’ frontman helped them win the FIFA Club World Cup last year, but also angered his supporters by making controversial comments to Italian media in December.
The “I’m so happy!” message may indicate that Lukaku was unhappy while at Chelsea. The club have decided to sell him as they begin their new era under Todd Boehly’s ownership, but Inter do not have an option to buy him outright next summer.
