Jonny Evans is all set to extend his Man United stay, with a one year contract in the offing.

Manchester United have become pretty stagnant in the transfer window over the last fortnight or so, with the Red Devils struggling to move some players on.

Erik ten Hag is in a situation where he has to sell before he can buy. However, no incoming look likely right now.

United are rooting through the bargain bucket at the moment. Perhaps we’ll see a back-up keeper signed. It’s a necessity, particularly if Dean Henderson leaves.

Another centre-back is an absolute must. Well, the player that Ten Hag may turn to could already be on the books in the form of Jonny Evans.

It’s The Telegraph with the claim. They reckon United are ‘close to agreeing’ a one-year contract with the 35-year-old, who has impressed the gaffer since joining the club on a short-term contract in pre-season.

Ten Hag views the Northern Irishman as adequate cover for the first-team, when the regular players need a rest or are injured. It could also have repercussions for Harry Maguire, who may well fall further down the pecking order as a result.

The verdict

Honestly. I expected it. Evans is decent enough. With the right quality alongside him, the veteran can do a good enough job as a stand-in – but nothing more than that.

I know it’s not the glamour signing that many fans are clamouring for, but it’s a necessary one. United need extra depth at centre-back. Yes, someone like Jean-Clair Todibo would have been preferred, but this is the situation United are in right now.

I wouldn’t expect to see Evans get into double figures in terms of games, but it’s handy to have him there.

Do you think handing Jonny Evans a one year contract makes sense? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
