Man United are set to hand Kobbie Mainoo a new contract after his excellent breakthrough season.
Manchester United have always proven that youth is the key to long-term success in this game. The Red Devils have somewhat moved away from that mantra during the Glazer era, though I believe Erik ten Hag is trying to reinstall those beliefs.
The gaffer hasn’t shied away from giving teenagers their chance, though he is keen to stress that these guys have to earn it, rather than being handed opportunities on a plate. Alejandro Garnacho was the man of the moment last year. This time around, it’s Kobbie Mainoo.
The midfielder spent the first portion of the season sidelined, after picking up an injury in pre-season. His absence was huge, though at the time, we didn’t really realise it.
Now that he’s fully fit and firing, we’re seeing just how talented this young man is. He’s an absolute joy to watch, with the footballing world firmly at his feet.
As a result of his performances, United are set to reward the youngster with a new contract. That’s according to the Daily Mail.
They believe Mainoo is ‘in line’ for an improved deal, as his ability to adapt to the first-team environment, while showing composure beyond his years, is what has most impressed the staff and his teammates in Manchester.
Mainoo signed a new deal about a year ago, though he will be given improved terms at the end of this season, continuing in line with his development. This isn’t a new trend at the Theatre of Dreams, with the club doing exactly the same with the aforementioned Garnacho.
For United, this is all about protecting their asset and keeping Mainoo happy. He seems content with life in the first-team right now, though a paycheque upgrade will only further those positive thoughts about the Old Trafford side.
You always worry when big money is handed to players who are so young, but in this case, I feel good about Mainoo. His attitude is exemplary and he will remain firmly rooted to the ground as that’s just the sort of guy he is.
For now, it’s about him finishing the season strongly.
