Arsenal could return for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi following a thigh surgery for Thomas Partey.
Partey sustained a thigh injury in training last month and it was initially predicted that he could be out for a few weeks. However, it was reported yesterday that he won’t return until the turn of the year.
There is no guarantee that he will be fully fit in January. If he were to return to team training, Ghana are bound to call him up for the African Cup of Nations held in the Ivory Coast.
Taking both situations in mind, the Gunners could prioritise a new midfielder this winter. They could return for Zubimendi, having missed out on his services earlier this summer.
Zubimendi would suit Gunners’ playing style
The Spaniard was heavily linked with a move away from Sociedad last summer, but he decided to stay after helping them qualify for the Champions League after several seasons.
Sociedad have done tremendously well in the elite club competition. They recently secured their round of 16 spot after a comfortable 3-1 win over Benfica at the Reale Arena.
It is uncertain whether Zubimendi will consider an exit with Sociedad still alive in the competition, but we believe he would be an ideal signing for the north London giants.
The Gunners have been tracking the midfielder with a €60 million release clause. He has several attributes which could make him a regular starter in the number six position.
Zubimendi is good with the ball at his feet, but his main strengths are on the defensive side. He has averaged 1.6 tackles and 1.7 clearances per game with 5.8 recoveries this term.
He is also good in engaging in duels and has won 69 per cent of his aerial challenges in La Liga.
Arteta is known to be an admirer of his compatriot but one thing is for sure that Sociedad are unlikely to offer any discount on their prized asset. They will want his buy-out clause to be paid in full.
